Tashpmi.uz - The Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute
The building of the 5th Pediatric Infectious Diseases Hospital was reconstructed for the prospective Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute. The Institute was officially opened on 07.09.1972 named Middle Asian Pediatric Medical Institute (SAMPI).
The main purpose for opening a new medical institute was to prepare pediatricians for the Middle Asian Republics and South Kazakhstan. The shortage of physicians in those fields was considerable and had a negative affect on child mortality and morbidity in those times. In a short time 40 departments were organized and opened.
For the 1972-1973 academic year 703 students were admitted as first year students. Later 3170 students from 32 nationalities began their study at the institute. Admission of students increased up to 800. Each year Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan sent 50 students, 15 students from South Kazakhstan and 600 students from 4 regions of Uzbekistan were admitted for the first year.
From 1979 onwards the TashPMI began to have its own "TashPMI clinic", a teaching hospital.
After the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan the TashPMI reduced the numbers of admitted students. In 1998 e.g. 410 students were accepted as first year students.
In 1997 The Government of Uzbekistan approved the new Charter for the TashPMI. Tasks, rights of all departments, and the structure of the TashPMI, all activities of TashPMI were outlined in this document.
In 1997 the TashPMI begin to establish relationships with well known foreign institutions such as Yonsei University College of Medicine (South Korea), Fachhochschule Osnabrueck (Germany), Washington University (Seattle, USA), IESKA (Barcelona, Spain), non-government organizations such as "All Nations Friendship Hospital (South Korea) and "Mercy Project" (Great Britain).
In 1988 the institute was admitted into the structure of Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan and was renamed "Tashkent Medical Pediatric Institute" (TashPMI).
For more than thirty years the TashPMI has prepared more than 1800 highly skilled pediatricians. This means that about 30% of all doctors of Uzbekistan are graduates from the TashPMI. The staff of our Institute will do all efforts to continue preparing good pediatricians.
